Taking a step back and reflecting on your parenting is important not only for you but for your kids. Here are a few easy ways to improve your parenting skills and to recreate a positive environment for your family.
Day 1: Smile. Smiling at your kids shows them you love them without saying anything. Challenge yourself to smile at your kids whenever you look at them.
Day 2: Speak softly to your kids. As the voices in your house rise, lower yours. Also, when disciplining/directing your kids, use a soft voice.
Day 3: Say what you mean. When giving requests, say exactly what you mean. Be specific with your directions. If your kids don’t understand your directions, repeat them slowly.
Day 4: Ask for help. As a parent it is easy to get caught up in housework, cooking, running errands, etc… Assign age appropriate chores or tasks to your kids. Some examples are sweeping, matching socks, feeding and watering pets/plants and dusting.
Day 5: Accept your kids where they are. Make a list of your kids’ strengths and weaknesses. Think about ways you can help them develop more strengths.
Creating a positive home environment is hard work and takes a lot of practice. But once you start changing the way you interact with your kids, your kids will start changing the way they react to you.
