Responding to our children can make or break their spirit. As parents, we battle between our mind and heart when it comes to parenting our kids. A lot of times, we respond to our kids as if they are adults. We need to understand kids live for the moment. Their decisions and actions reflect how they are feeling that precise moment. Responding too harshly can harden their spirit. Responding too softly can weaken the boundaries that are being taught. Meet your kids where they are. Use books, role playing, finger puppets, and drawing/coloring to teach your kids about feelings and appropriate ways to react to situations. You can also use this time to set/review boundaries and consequences for breaking the rules. Responding positively to our kids is key to promoting healthy self-confidence and self-awareness.
