We are in full swing of the holiday season. This time can be such a treasured memory for many. But for some, especially young kids, this time can be overwhelming and overstimulating. All the people, places, travel, and the expectations can throw kids into meltdown mode. So how do we help our kids cope plus enjoy the holiday season? Below are a few tips to help you help your kids.
1. Limit screen time as much as possible. Electronics are proven to be overstimulating in general and this, added to the holiday chaos, will increase the chances of your kids having meltdowns.
2. Limit sugar and processed foods. There is a lot of research that supports these two things can cause negative behaviors in kids.
3. Get physical exercise! Anytime you can play catch or even walk around with your kids will help their nervous system stay regulated.
4. If you notice your child starting to have a meltdown, try to find a quiet corner or room for them to unwind. You can read books or sing quietly to them. Or they might just need silence and that’s okay.
5. Involve your kids in baking and helping prepare for the festivities as much as possible. This will help them feel like they are contributing and boost their self-confidence.
Even though the holidays can be stressful and chaotic, it is still a time to reflect how privileged and blessed we are to live in America. Practice gratitude by making a list of things you and your kids are thankful for this season. It can be as simple as a bed or electricity. Remember, there is always someone who has less than you do. Happy Thanksgiving my friends!
